Hype
At his wit’s end about how to wipe out the Gallos, protected 24-7 by the best security force in the city, Junior, according to legend, slid a dress on his wild, curly-haired sidekick and sent him off in a red sports car with a trunkload of weapons. The plan was to slip past the Pizza Squad with a wink and a smile, then blast the Dormitory, but somebody tipped off Inspector Martin. He doubled the manpower around President Street, leaving the gunman all dressed up with nowhere to go.
Soon, a fleet of what Inspector Martin called “shotgun riders” roamed through the neighborhood, perfectly legal as the weapons weren’t concealed. Cruising along Court Street in a white Oldsmobile, a rider found a sitting duck on the afternoon of December 11, 1961, Gallo man Big Lollypop, coming out of Pintchik’s with a can of paint in each hand for the Dormitory. Bullets sprayed from the backseat, hitting Lollypop in the ankle. Paint poured out from a pierced can.
Old Man Profaci was not happy.
The botched Lollypop hit was the latest headline in the Gallo-Profaci war, a spectacle of vanishing bodies, fish wrapped in clothes, cross-dressing kamikaze raids, and now, drive-bys on paint stores in broad daylight in the middle of one of the most crowded thoroughfares of the borough. According to a Profaci Family informant, there were to be no more attempts on the Gallos unless there were no witnesses, near impossible considering the NYPD encampment on President Street.
Cops made the job tougher upon arresting a shotgun rider on account of the state conservation law, claiming that the loaded weapons endangered the exotic birds and frogs in the Prospect Park Zoo.
Up to his ears in Gallos, Junior exhausted his best tricks by two thirty in the morning on January 5, 1962, as Sammy Davis Jr. wound down his second act at the Copa, heavy with the smell of Chinese food. Junior’s beefy dinner companion, Profaci capo Jiggs Forlano, got up from their table at ringside. He walked across the dance floor toward a petite blonde with dark cat’s-eye shades, a fur hat, and matching coat, laughing hysterically next to her date, that pudgy, stray Gallo, Sid Slater.
“What the hell are you doing in a fancy nightclub like this,” asked Jiggs.
Unaware that Sid was ratting to the DA, Larry had given Sid a bill roll to pay for Jeffie’s hospital bill. Sid kept half, three hundred dollars, enough to get a few scotches on the rocks and some champagne. His moll deserved a good night out, having been busy dog-sitting Lepke while Jeffie was in labor.
“Come over to my table,” said Jiggs.
Sid headed to ringside. Junior’s blood boiled. He wasn’t sealed behind an iron fence. He was a tough son of a bitch with real balls. According to varying reports, Sid was grabbed by the tie and given a cheek wound, either by a bite or a “newspaper hook,” the kind newspaper vendors use on a ring to open up tabloids.
Captains and waiters in two-toned tuxedo jackets cleared out the area and told the customers to stay away.
